That is a lot of smoking real estate for the money. Not to bash, but when I see what others give for the same, or more outlay, there is no comparison.

Tony, I noticed that the backs are now vented.  Is that just for the benefit of the controller or something that I should consider due to the heat of the large heating element?

No Dave, that's strictly for the SSR (Solid-State Relay) in the D models.  It gets pretty warm, so there are vents on the back, and a heat sink mounted on the bottom to keep it cool.  No need for the vents on a standard #4.  This pic is the SSR.

When I took the back off mine last weekend, the insulation at the bottom was pretty brown.  I didn't know if it was smoke or heat coloring.  I couldn't imagine smoke getting to that spot so I thought it might have been over heating at the nuts to the heating element.

There is more heat, at the bottom.  I've seen a little browning of the insulation in my 1, 2 and 3; but it's not enough to worry about.  With the "D" models, the only part that gets hot is the SSR.  Same as the standalone Auber, but it's contained in the housing.  That's why the heat sink is on the bottom, and we use the legs to elevate it for airflow.  The controller box, on the D models, doesn't get hot at all.
