Auber PID in a SI #3.

Well, I took a dive into the real deep end and ordered a Auber 153 for my Smokin-It #3.

It was on sale but still $200. Ouch.

I have seen where several people did this and got great results.

I am trying to decide where to put the temperature probe.

They suggest "we think the sensor should be placed just slight below the very top cooking rack".

On a SI3, that would be 1 3/4" from the top. That seems to high to me.

Could someone who has done this offer any help or advice on position?

I can't answer your question, but curious to see what advice you receive. I just ordered the Auber 1204 for my SI #2. Looking forward to seeing how it performs with the PID!

Ben, I was up on the Auber site looking at their PID controllers. For the #2, is there any reason the WSD-1204CPH wouldn't work? (http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14_28&products_id=380) While it was designed for another brand of smoker, it seems to be good electrically for the #2's voltage/wattage and identical to the 1503 in functionality. Any thoughts?

Since the one for the Bradley is listed at a max 13A and the 1503 is 15A, I believe that is why it was chosen. It can handle the power requirements of the heating elements. I don't think that the 13A would have enough headroom to handle the loads. Just my thoughts.

I have been using my auber for a year now and it is great.  What I do with the temp. Prob is I take a piece of foil and kind of ball it up with prob sticking out an stick it down between the bars on the rack that I am smoking my meat on
That way I know what the smoker temp. Is where my food is located in the smoker because the temp. Does change from the bottom to the top of the smoker. This is just my experience with the smoker, I have the smokin it #3.

Something I'm not finding in the documentation is the "go" step.

Does the Auber activate the cook cycle as you finish the last step of the program or by another method?

What happens if you goof up a step of the program you're trying to set up?  Do you start over or just step to the end and cancel it?  Can you just pull the plug?

I certainly don't want to risk damaging my cooker by stopping a just started cycle.

Dan,

When you are programming the 6 steps, you can cycle back through them to make sure they're right.  It remembers the last settings, so the "go" step is just a matter of turning the unit on, once hooked up to the smoker.  You can actually modify the steps during use, too.  I've done this to change the step from the temp I initially thought I wanted.

So you set up the program and then connect the PID to the "ready to smoke" smoker?

No issues operating (programming) the PID w/o the probes?

Hey Dan,

No problem programming without the probes - it just won't display the "live" temps.  I usually program in the comfort of my kitchen, then hook it up when I'm ready to start cooking.
