I found that the instructions are a bit confusing regarding preheating. I don't think that there is a technical reason for not preheating (meaning that preheating probably won't damage the smoker) but rather the consensus seems to be that smoke penetration is better when you start with a cold...

I know this is an old thread but I thought I'd add this in case someone comes across this in the future: As far as I know, the values are in tenths of an hour (not very intuitive, I know). A value of 0.1 would be six minutes; 0.5 would be 30 minutes. So to answer the question: 0.5 time means...
