Smoked dog food?

My dog hates every brand of dog food that I buy but loves dad's smoked meats.  I wondering if I should try smoking some dog food.  What do ya think?

A lot depends on what you mean by smoking some dog food. :)

If you mean, take the dog food you have, and put it in the smoker - that might work - better if it's canned, probably not so much if it's dry.

If you mean ... smoke up some meat and make your own?  That's probably the better solution.  There's a lot of DIY dog food recipes out there on the 'net, I bet you can find one that your dog would love.

Of course, it would mean that you'd need to smoke something on a regular basis ... (yeah, yeah, twist my arm!)

Let us know what you try!

Ok this is the second time I have read this post and really was not going to comment. But, Dave I think a #1 is in order for smoking the dog food. And really why not, as they are a mans best friend. But, if me would keep his/her food out of the #4. Also would go with his favorite canned food. Unless you want to go from scratch and make your own. Just use a base meat that is good for him/her and you might add some vegies. Good luck.

Can't blame the dog , he knows what food tastes better.
I had a co worker that never cooked but always ate out, seven days a week.  They would roast a turkey once a week and that is what the dog ate.  They even bought a dishwaher just to wash the dogs bowls. Boy how we pamper our pets.

Fortunately my little Cairn Terrier will eat anything that does not eat him first. His breed is only supposed to be up to 14-15 pounds and he only 3 years old and was 17.5 at his vet appointment yesterday. I only feed him 1 cup a day, but I think my kids tend to sneak him extra.

I don't know that I would smoke any store bought dog food in my good smoker. But like Bill said, if you make a DIY dog food out of natural ingredients maybe. There is just something about this that I don't think I would do. ;) It is kind of like cooking a meal with water from the bathtub. It really shouldn't be an issue because the water comes from the same place. But, just the thought of it makes me go ugh!  8)

Set out a dish of "his food" then quit giving him "Dads smoked meat" when he is hungry he will eat his food.

Sounds like my method, Brian! ;)  Funny how that works! lol.  Although, my meathead does get treated to the tasty rib and pork butt bones!

I've had Labs for the last 15 years until my last one passed last year.  Now we have a spoiled German Shorthair that we rescued.  Her name is Kona.
