Remote access to my WiFi Smoker

I'm looking at stepping up to a WiFi enabled smoker and was wondering if, once set up, I could access the unit outside of my home (i.e. local LAN).  Can I simply open a port on my router?

Has anyone done that?

Yes, you can change the temp, time, etc on the fly using the mobile app on your phone, from anywhere  -  provided your smoker remains connected to your home router.
