Installed Auber WST-1520H PID on Model 2

Recently installed a Auber (WST-1520H) PID on my Model #2. WOW!!!!….what a game changer. Two successful cooks completed. Now I need to muster up enough nerve to install a permanent temperature probe. Many thanks to this community for the tips and tricks.

I just remembered that members from years gone by touted the benefit of leaving the Auber as a separate unit. Some did permanently install it but also installed a bypass switch so they could choose digital or analog. Should the Auber develop a problem, you still have the smoker with analog function intact. Should you decide to install a permanent probe, drilling stainless steel is tough going.

I installed a fixed (permanent) Auber temperature probe in the SI-X2 today.  This probe has a nylon base, so it's supposed to insulate the temperature probe from the "heat sink" effect of the stainless steel wall of the smoker.

To install the probe, you must first remove the back cover of the smoker, and take out the 3 layers of insulation.  This is an itchy job, so wear disposable nitrile or latex gloves!

Auber recommends installing the probe as high as possible in the smoker.  It should be under the highest shelf.  Since we can move our racks into a high or low position, I found the...
