Anyone tried using charcoal rather than wood?

Combined with wood?

I tried once adding briquettes to the wood to get the all important yet flavorless smoke ring.  Not worth the effort.

I have never used charcoal while smoking.
If you are after the smoke ring that you can't taste, use some prague powder#1. And agree with old Sarge, not worth it.
