Did a little work on the ol' Model 2. First order was a good cleaning, and disassembly. I moved my Auber permanent probe to 1" from the top (been meaning to do this for awhile). I also added a sub-zero power cord, and kept it about 3' long (just enough to reach the Auber). While I was in there, I added the 800w element, and routed the probe lead out the bottom hole with the power cord.
The box got a good sanding with 180 grit, wipe with acetone, and a few coats of self-etching primer. It then received 3 or 4 coats of Dupli-Color Ford red engine enamel. Topped it off with some great Razorback decals, and I'm in Hog Heaven! ;D My buddies eying the SI are crazy jealous! lol!
One thing left to do: The door logo is stamped very shallow (at least in the middle), so there wasn't much to do with it during painting. I'm having a die-cut decal made in white, in the exact shape and size as the logo, to go over it. I'll update pics when that happens.

Beautiful Tony!!!

Beautiful Tony!!!
Thank Arnie! I think I'm going to do the Little Guy (#1) in Packers green and gold! 8)

As much as I like the stainless look, I love the red. The green and gold should be also really kool.

If it was a car you would be pulled over for speeding. Nice job Tony.
-
Paint looks great, I almost guessed powder coating.
-
Nice paint job Tony!

You removed the original controller completely? I dont see the knob or indicator light.
-
Tony, that is simply outstanding! That is so well done I don't think I would be able to use it for fear of ruining the finish. Kind of like taking a '64 Mustang show car to Wallyworld.
-
Wow Tony,
You can be super proud of the work you did here. Very impressive, almost to nice to use :)

This is the digital prototype I was testing. The original controller box didn't work right, so I removed it. This one never had the stock controller, light and top plate. If it did, I probably would have left them on. It's bypassed, so I didn't see the need to have anything on the top.

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments! I wanted to do something totally different. I need to talk to Steve about a powder coat option!

The engine enamel flows out really well on the last coat, and it does look like powder coating.

I think he would have some takers, Im good at a lot of things, but not to this level with paint!

I know its just stickers but be careful on what to market, some "schools" of education will look for a kickback. haha.
Powder color bake would be great as an option on the SI vs what other "dont" do.

looks good, was actually debating dipping mine so I can take it off if I get tired of the look, but color does look nice.
Did you take it all apart to do it or tape everything up?
-
except for the color and logos, it looks great! Shoulda gone black and gold with some tiger logos ;)
-
Looks AWESOME Tony!
-
OK, now I'm jealous! That looks fantastic. Great idea, and beautifully done.
-
Thanks, again, guys! Steven - the colors and logos are perfect, thank you very much! ::) Trip - I removed the door/latches, back and top (no big deal - door & latches just lift off (pull the pin on the latches), top and back are just screws. I removed all the insulation on the back and top, then reassembled after rewiring and painting, that way, I had nice shiny screws.

I would have loved to see the fully disassembled picture. Let us know how well the paint sticks. I've tried painting aluminum and stainless using self etching primer before and still have adhesion issues. It looks pretty for a smoker. ;)
-
Fancy there Tony! Looks great. Even better if it had a big Husker 'N' on it. ;) I might have to deck mine out with LED's now!

I might have to deck mine out with LED's now!
Some of those rgb led strips that you can cut and stick to the bottom would look nice, but I have these in my gun safe for lighting and the stick doesn't last too well.

I have a friend that uses those in his gun safe too (but I think his are white only). I haven't bought any of these strip LED's yet but I've pondered it.

Ha! I guess I need to visit 4 State Trucks in Joplin (home of "Trick My Truck") and get some chicken lights now! ;)

Costco has the led strip lights, but usually sell out quick. Do check it out. It's got their name on it and goes for about $30 bucks. Multiple colors with full remote. I use them in my house. Really nice.

I am new here and have always loved grilling. I recently purchased a 3D with the cart and decided I wanted a good home for it so I cleaned out a corner of my pole barn and went to work. The pictures are the result. I love it and am looking forward to many smoking experiences out in my new corner of the world. These are before and after photos

Backsplash and range hood. Very nice indeed.

Nice set up. Some Cabots timber oil wood stain would make that wall look like a kitchen floor:)

Nicely done Jeff!

Outstanding, Jeff! Great to have you with us! When you can, head over to the Introductions section and tell us about yourself (that would be a great place for this first post). Looking forward to seeing you around!

OutfrickenStanding. New to the smokin it family as of yesterday and a Hog fan from North Central Arkansas. As soon as I unboxed my smoker, #2, I started thinking how to PIG the thing up. You, my man, are a fricken inspiration. I kneel before the great one and now can only mentor and follow in the blazed path of Razorback smoker Nirvana. WPS Go Hogs.

Haha!! Glad I could inspire the creativity in you, Mike!! Great to have you with us, brother! WPS!!!!

How is the paint holding up? I've been considering doing something along these lines.

Most of it is OK. There has been some flaking around the bottom. The key to this is finding the right primer for stainless, and allowing a long cure time before use. I'm not satisfied with the self-etching primer. If I do another one, I plan on doing even more research (not sure how) on priming stainless - it's a booger!

How about some update photos showing how the paint held up over 7 years?

I sometimes wonder about the people who have disappeared from forums. Like DivotMaker here, or Pork Belly, who has offered so much great info here.

People move on. Sometimes it is health related. Maybe a death and spouse or friend unaware of the forum activities and so we just 'wonder'. Sometime folks, the old timers get tired of helping the ungrateful complainers who join for the sole purpose of bellyaching. Never even so much as a howdy, I am....from..... Just jump in complaining and needing their hand held. There are lots of reasons. Some are just too busy smoking and eating. Enjoy you #1.
