Tempted to join that forum, yet a little nervous about getting in trouble. It's not like all SI owners are wealthy or elitist. Just willing to scrimp and save a few extra bucks for the best quality, a long term investment savings. I understand buying something else first and being bit by the "bug". My WSM was a great smoker to introduce me to the world of home BBQ, and prove to me that smoking was more than just an occasional amusement. The MES probably is that for others. Eventually they will replace their MES with something better like an SI (if their MES doesn't frustrate the hell out of them and turn them away from smoking for good first!) Just wish I had an SI first, but they didn't exist when I bought my WSM, probably for at least another decade...

Kari - I don't think you will get in any trouble, but it is MES heavy. Treading lightly is the name of the game.

Probably would be hard to quell my enthusiasm for the SI to the point necessary. I might just lurk for a while as a non-member and check out the vibe.

Well you do have WSM experience.  It is a few months old.

I've never chosen to get into the weeds on food forums about equipment.  It's about the food for me.

That's good advice! Unfortunately some I should've heeded a few months back, lol. I've learned to just shut up unless I am asked to offer my opinion. People are so thin skinned that you just have to tread lightly.

I only hit the equipment sections and once in awhile Steve gets a new customer. It is how a business grows. Every little bit helps.

I might have just stepped in it over there. Someone said to go with the Masterbuilt because it was:

much cheaper than smokin it for the same thing, and still offer comparable features.

I couldn't let that go. I tried to be cordial in my response, but not sure it will be taken that way or not. We'll see. Hopefully I don't get flamed/banned over there. ;)

Now I have something to do tonight. Thanks for "stepping in it".

My 4 cents has been added. Avatar and signature changed.

What? Talk about completely misinformed, or didn't even bother comparing. Not even close to the same thing.

I think ignorant of the facts is more the case. But hopefully people reading the thread will do there homework and decide after reviewing the pros and cons. That is all that I would ask for. If they really can't afford an SI and a MES is all than they can afford or want to spend, I say go for it.

I kindasortsalmost agreed with the post:  they both consist of a box, wheels, racks, heating element, controller, use wood for smoke.  From there on I tried to promote SI.
