Very disappointed with Fruitawood
« on: October 07, 2020, 12:33:17 PM »
I got my box of hickory from Fruitawood today.
I ordered 3" x 3" chunks.  Most of what I got is well over 4", and ALL of it has a lot of bark on it.

Boo.
I guess you get what you pay for.

That does sound like a bummer.  Have you talked to them about it?

No, not yet. I spent the day dealing with a lot of remodel issues with the house. Plumber here half the day, deliveries running off schedule - the wood was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

I ordered some of the good stuff from Smokin It, so at least I will have that soon.

Some wood is cleaner than others.  Just the luck of the draw.  It is pretty easy (although a nuisance) to whack the bark off with a hatchet or a sharp wood chisel.  And there are some folks who don't worry about the bark and just use it and don't find it producing any bitterness or off flavor. All personal preference.

Does the wood from Smokin It at least fit the smoker box in a #1?  I'm close to needing more wood, but I really don't have the time or patience to chisel away at all the Smokinlicious wood again to get it down to size.

Don't fear the bark, it all smokes.

Good question...in fact if it is the same size as the hickory samples that come with the smokers, I am all in

It should!  Same wood that Steve ships with the smokers.  You can always double check with Steve.

I have been well pleased with the wood I got from smokinlicious. Some pieces are a bit large but after a whack with the hatchet they work great. I usually use  a two wood blend so I generally need about a half piece of each to reach the correct weight.
