Side Rails / Rack blocked
« on: March 17, 2019, 08:23:26 PM »
So I'm a little surprised and disappointed with an element of design on the 3DW.  The side rails have holes in them to place them higher or lower on the sides to raise or lower the racks a little.  The rails only just barely fit in the higher position, but they do fit so that's fine.  The problem is that the temperature probe inside the smoker is in the exact same position as the top rack rail at that point.  This makes it kind of pointless to raise the side rails.

Fortunately, the width of the 3DW is the same as my #2, so my racks I use for smoking nuts will still fit and since they are sized for a #2, they'll still fit in the top slot even when the rails are raised.

Any idea why this design is as it is?  My guess is that there is a desire to have it high in the smoker to get the temperature reading from that location and to keep juices, etc. from dripping on it.

Larry - Sorry I missed this. A couple of years back, folks were using the Auber units and installing a dedicated probe for the Auber and bypassing the analog controller. Tony, AKA DivotMaker, was working with Steve on the addition of a built-in PID and part of his experimenting involved placing the probe in various areas for best stability.  Tony did a lot of smoker modification and probe moving to find the optimum location of the probe. The top area of the cabinet was determined to be the most stable. If you dig through Tony's posts on auber you might be able to find it.  I cannot remember where he decided the probe should go relative to the ceiling of the smoker.  You could probably drill out a new spot for your probe and alleviate the conflict provided the probe has sufficient slack in the wiring. Adding a PID to the SI units is in the second link. Dave

EDIT:  Here are some from Tony.
