How long does the 3D take to heat up?
« on: February 13, 2019, 07:49:52 PM »
How long does it typically take the 3D to heat up? For example, if u throw 2 racks of ribs in, and set it to 250. If it started around 70 degrees, how long do u estimate it would take to get to 250 temp, inside the smoker?

I've never checked.  As soon as I see the temp start to rise and smoke is produced I am off to take care of chores, watch a ball game on TV or something productive. I don't go back till the smoke is within 30 minutes of whatever time I selected. If cooking to temp, I don't check till the next day.

Small edit:  How long it takes to get to temp can depend upon the ambient temperature inside the box as well as the meat load.  But as I said, I really never checked.

At 10 degrees F starting temp, it took my 3D a little over an hour to hit 275.  Warmer weather is certainly going to cut that down.  And most smokes are 225ish instead of 275.  But since you don't preheat the smoker beforehand the smoke, I don't think it is really too relevant.  While the box is heating up, so is the meat.

Sorry I just realized you asked about a 3D and my response is for an analog 3 but may still be of interest:  I smoked a rib rack a few days ago.  The rib rack IT at start was 44 deg (out of fridge and left on counter for a bit), the #3 smoker temp was 80 deg (it's inside a heated area) and the smoker was set to 235deg.  In 30 minutes the rib rack IT was 90 deg and the smoker was 276 deg.

I’d like to report my experience with the 3D is similar to Tom’s 3, with ambient 47 and meat 47 starting temps. 30 minutes for box to temp.

Did you get your replacement smoker?

Yes, I did. He sent it promptly, and had fed ex pick up the defective one. It happens. But I really appreciated that he sent out the replacement, before I had to send the other back. Most places won't do that.

Just started ribs.  It took my 3D WIFI 1 hour to get to 240, with an ambient temp of 83.  That”s about the same as it was in February with ambient of 10.  I will note that my graph showed a drop to 50% power for a moment, and then a slow move back to 100%.  I cannot explain that.  But it  certainly slowed it down somewhat.  But honestly I don’t think ambient temp affects warmup more than a few minutes.

I'll have to do a test on mine when I get the chance...  that seems too long, but can't say for sure.  Any chance the box probe is dirty and/or the PID settings are off?

On my 3d wifi, starting smoker temp 83 degrees. It took 25 minutes to reach 225 and 58 minutes to reach 235.
I have one rack of babyback ribs, 28 oz. of beans and 1 baked potato.

Good idea Larry.  I will have to check the box probe after the cook. I have never cleaned it.
