Title: Does anyone use Sycamore ???
Post by: polarlys on December 03, 2018, 12:51:49 PM
I have some wood in my shop I think is Sycamore.   It's got an interesting grain but it doesn't smell very nice when I'm cutting or sanding it.   Most of the common woods I use are traditional woods for smoking.   Oak, Cherry, Maple, Hickory etc.   But I was thinking that the Sycamore might not be a good meat smoking choice.   Just being curious here,   I have no plans to attempt to use it.   I have plenty of the good stuff.

A quick google search consistently comes back saying sycamore gives a bad flavor and should not be used for smoking.

I guess the NOSE KNOWS.   I think I've seen some very nice bowls made from Sycamore and I'm playing with it in my shop for the first time so it's into the burn bin for me.  But I already knew dat.   I'm not even sure just where I got the few pieces I'm using but it's a small project and will be painted anyway.

Thanks Larry for confirming what I already suspected.

Sycamore makes a nice knife block to keep by the smoker!
