DIN 1/32 temperature controller
« on: March 19, 2022, 10:40:00 AM »
Would it be possible to convert an analog Smokin It smoker to digital controls by making a cutout on the analog faceplate and fitting a DIN 1/32 PID temperature controller in the cutout hole?  If the DIN 1/32 controller is successfully installed in the cutout, the edges around the controller would be waterproofed by applying caulk.  The DIN 1/32 controller would be wired to bypass switch (used for switching power between analog and new digital controller), SSR, and thermocouple (for temperature sensing).

I have two suggestions.
1. Read the information at the following link.  I have selected one page but there are 9 total.
2. Purchase the smoker and do as you want.

It would be possible to put it in a cutout, but i think the heat would be too much for it.  You also still have to put a relay/ssr in somewhere.

I am probably buying either the Smokin it 2D or 3D.  I see the possibility of using the Auber DIN 1/32 PID temperature controller to replace the stock digital temperature controller if the stock controller fails outside the warranty period and I am not willing pay over $200 for a new stock controller.  The Auber DIN 1/32 PID temperature controller is cheaper at $36.98 vs $269.99 for a replacement stock digital controller.

The modification would be on a digital Smokin It smoker unit by removing the circuit board from the digital controller plastic enclosure.  A DIN 1/32 sized cutout would be made on the stock digital controller enclosure.  The DIN 1/32 PID temperature controller would be snapped in to the cutout in the plastic enclosure.  The Auber DIN 1/32 PID controller would then be connected to the existing SSR, temperature sensor, and power supply.

Enjoy!  It will be interesting to read about.  Looking forward to your first after purchase and smoke post.

If you can do your own wiring, you can DIY a PID control system for a minimum amount of $$.

You can get a controller, thermocouple, and SSR for under $20 from aliexpress

I use the REX C100 controller for most of my prototype thermal control projects.
