Does it sound like I need a new element?

Maybe.  How full was your smoker?  Tonight, after is it dark, fire up your smoker without the woodbox.  It the element bright and uniform?  Any dark spots and a new element is called for. You can also test the element as shown in this link:http://www.appliance411.com/faq/test-element.shtml

Thanks. I will try that tonight. It wasn't very full.

This is embarrassing. While I was only doing two pork tenderloins, I had them in a large pan. Apparently a little too large. Anyway, I fired it up without the pan and it worked just fine. File this one under "Lessons Learned".

Thanks for posting the testing link on the element. Last month, while smoking 4 pork butts, I woke up to a holding oven basically. No glow on the element. I need to test the element still, but I’m pretty sure it’s done. The Auber unit turns on/off when powered, just no heat.

I’m not the most mechanically sound person, is replacing the element fairly straight forward? I found another page displaying the steps to take the back off and such. Seems like it’s easy enough?

I changed the element on my #2 a few years ago and it was pretty easy.    If I can do it, anybody can!   Good luck!
