Title: Smoking in the rain?
Post by: BillB on February 24, 2023, 10:21:33 AM
The last several weekends the weather forecast showed a chance of rain. I decided to shut down my brisket prep. since I was unsure if I should leave my #2 analog smoker out if there may be some rain. I do not have any covered area, so I do all my smoking in the open air. I thought about building some sort of hood I could place on top of the smoker to cover the electronics if there was a chance of rain, or even just a small glass jar covering the knob. I do have the smoke hole cover so I’m not concerned about that. Should I be concerned about rain showers and the electronics?

I have used a golf umbrella over mine in a pinch.  And a blue tarp held off with milk crates or a cardboard box large enough to allow air flow for exhausting the smoke will work too.

I use a pop up 10'x10' tent.  You can find them on sale for around $70.

I have been known to fumble around the golf umbrella when an unexpected shower pops up!  I also cut a hole in a small tin water pan and use that to cover the exhaust hole so rain doesn't enter the smoker.  But generally, when rain is forecasted, I avoid smoking.

The pop tent, though, sounds like a perfect solution for smoking even if rain is in the forecast.   I would just have to batten down the tent when the wind kicks up!
