Yes, you can create a suitable fan with a standard PC case fan.  Personally, I like the jerky fan because a). It is a well-made stainless enclosure with a hood and filter, and b). Just not worth the hassle of reinventing the wheel (at least for me).  Only have to buy it once, and it's "plug and play!"  Besides, it looks darn cool on top of the smoker. ;)

I like the jerky fan as well... I just can't stomach the price of it. Damn near $100 with shipping... Maybe I'll put it on my birthday list later this year...
