You can use the Auber with just fhe cabinet probe, just make sure it is plugged in to the top spot.

Also need to have the steps set up for time and not temp.

When I do ribs, I only use the cabinet probe by programming all steps to "t" instead of temp.

I am using johnnytex's hanging cabinet probe method and it is working great.  As much as I would like to have a permanent probe, I think for now I am ok.  If you don't want to drill this method works great.

Understood.

Be careful... Drop an Auber probe to touch near the firebox and you ruin the probe. I've done this twice.  So mounted a probe in back only to idiot proof it for my errors.

In my opinion the extra hour it takes to install the fixed probe are well worth it, takes this smoker to another level, turning into a true digital performer!

I understand but let me enjoy some success with the bypass and the auber.  I will tell you the temp was 250 almost the entire time I checked.  The auber is an amazing tool.  one day I will deploy the permanent probe.
