Low temp question
« on: February 27, 2014, 11:10:31 AM »
I'm still anticipating getting my #2 in a couple weeks and I'm thinking about one of my first smokes. Can anyone tell me what the lowest cabinet temperature is, that will produce smoke? In other words, is it possible to set the cabinet temp at 120 degrees (for example) and get smoke? I will be buying an Auber by the way. I also understand chips are better at low temps. Thanks for any input.

Gary, I set the initial temp on the Auber to 130 for 30 minutes.  Smoke starts rolling about 10 minutes in, but I haven't noticed what temp it actually starts at.  I'll watch on my next smoke.  Even though the box temp is not at 130, the element below the smoke box gets hot enough to get the wood smouldering.

Not positive, but I think I start seeing smoke at 85-90F.

That sounds about right, Steve.  I'll make a point to watch next time!

Thanks guys for the input. I'm going to want to do some cold smoking (cheese, maybe sausage, etc) and I was just looking for some different ideas. Once I get my unit, I'll start experimenting.

Gary, I highly recommend the cold smoke plate for cold smoking.   Works great!  Without it to isolate the box from even low temp, you'll still be too warm for cheese.  Just my 2-cents!
