Title: Temperature Swings
Post by: skioutwest on June 06, 2013, 10:49:07 PM
Just got my model #3 yesterday and went through the seasoning procedure.

I used a maverick just to check the temps at the various settings just to calibrate the dial.  Now I know temp swings are normal, even large swings, but thought mine were a bit excessive.  Just wanted the forum's opinion if I should touch base with Steve regarding it.  Below are my unscientific measurements, with an empty box, ambient temp in the 70s:

Setting     Low     High
MAX     260     325
250     248     315
225     220     298
200     190     265

I had the dial set dead center at each setting....don't these temps seem high?  Also, I am seeing up to a 78deg swing.

Could this just be because the unit was empty?  I had the probe two racks above the smoke box.

Also, not that this is a big deal, but I noticed the unit is made in China?  Were they always?  Thought I read somewhere that they were made in USA....build quality is great regardless.

Thanks in advance!

They will have swings like this if the smoker is empty.

Thanks, BHamel.  You were right, I did some ribs and the swings were about 30-40 deg....closer to what I expected.

Someone over on another smoking site in his/her enthusiasm did state (incorrectly) the country of origin. Probably assumed USA due to the fit, finish and overall quality.
