Title: New 2D - Meat probe jumpy readings
Post by: themenace on April 17, 2017, 08:36:32 AM
This weekend I did my first smoke with my new 2D. I found that the meat probe readings were very jumpy. The temperature on the display would jump around about +/- 4F with a different temperature being displayed about every 0.5s. The temperature appeared to be correct when compared to my Thermoworks Smoke, just very jumpy. For example when the Smoke showed 162F, the 2D would show a series of temps like: 158, 160, 165, 161, 157, etc.  The box temp display on the 2D was very stable.

Any ideas of what might be happening here?

Not sure why the meat probe would be doing this. May want to call Steve or shoot him an email.

When it is doing this try putting pressure on the back of the temp probe plug in different directions.  It sounds like a loose connection. It cook be loose on the inside of the controller.

I finally did another smoke where I used the temperature probe and I saw the jumpy readings again. I tried putting pressure on the connector at different angles and a few times I was able to get the temperature to stabilize. If I have a bad temperature probe connection, is this something that I should be able to repair on my own or should I talk to Smokin-It about replacement parts?

If it is where the probe plugs into the controller, tighten the  lock nut visible on the outside of the jack.  It you need to, remove the controller cover carefully and tighten the lock nut.
