Title: Small issue with my #3
Post by: MidnightBrewer on January 11, 2014, 04:31:12 PM
There are two sets of holes in the brackets that hold the shelves.  It looks like there is the option to mount the shelves high or low to adjust the spacing as needed.

My problem is the lower set of holes which would put the top shelf closer to the top of the smoker aren't usable.  They are drilled exactly where the pegs that hang the brackets are welded to the inside of my smoker.  This doesn't work becuase the pegs are at an angle to keep the bracket from sliding off so the holes are about 1/4" too high to actually use them.  Does anyone else have this issue?  I will eventually smoke some sausage and I want to place the smoke sticks as high up as possible so I am interested in being able to use the lower set of holes.

Otherwise the #3 is awesome.

I don't have that problem with my #1; maybe some of our #3 owners will chime in?  You should definitely be able to place the racks on the top post.  You might give Steve a call on the customer support line.

MidnightBrewer,

A couple of photos illustrating exactly what is/is not happening for clarification would be helpful.

I hope this clarifies what I am saying.  I can't raise the bracket high enough to place it on the second set of holes.  The hole in the bracket is just a little too low, by less than the thickness of the peg.

I do not have this issue. I just checked, I was working some mods on my SI3 some today.

I have noticed that the tolerances are suspect. I would call Steve.

Either he will make it right or maybe he throws you some goodies if you can live with it. Personally I have no need to move the shelves.

I noticed the same, but haven't had to worry about it yet.  Maybe if I do some summer sausage I might want to get it as high as possible.  I'll probably try tin snip or cutting wheel if I really have the itch to adjust.

1.  I would notify Steve as he needs to be aware of this from both  a customer satisfaction and a quality control point of view.  Sounds like the factory erred.

2.  You could grind down the top of the bracket, or hacksaw it some to fit.

3.  You could drill out/elongate the hole sufficiently so that the bracket fit.

4.  If it were me, I would do a combination of 2 and 3, a little here, a little there.  But still inform Steve of the issue.

2 and 3 and 1 .... Steve should give you an accessory for you rework and the quality assurance feedback.

I have the same issue with my #2.  Have yet to need to use it that way, so the need to repair hasn't either.  It appears to be a quality control issue.  Fortunatly, its a small issue that should be able to be fixed easily.

Ok just went out to the smoker and found that mine didn't line up either but if I tilt the shelves at a ~45 degrees it will allow the shelves to hook on. Might want to try that.

Benjammn:

That's what I have. You Sid it better. You have to tilt but it works. For me a mod isn't necessary.

Only the 2 pegs closest to the door were misaligned.  I ground the top of the pegs down to the necessary level to allow installation of the shelf bracket.  I used a 4 1/2 in Milwaukee grinder used upside down.  Good tight fit now.  Other 2 options would have been to grind out the recieving hole on the bracket or trim the necessary metal off of the top of the bracket.  My front 2 were 1/4 inch out!  As you can see in the picture the rear one is untouched. It took 5 minutes.

Good luck.

Having read the posts and the work arounds, to include tilting the shelf support bracket 45 degrees to catch the front pegs, I would say the immediate problem (nuisance) is solved, and let Steve work on the long term quality control issue.  Good catch and fixes all.
