4D box probe placement?
« on: December 05, 2021, 07:20:43 PM »
I just scored a barely used analog 4 (more on that in a coming post) that I want to connect to a new auber controller. Wondering where the internal probe is located on the 4D? Thanks!

It is in the middle of the back. Where that coiled tube is going to.
Be careful not to kink that tube, it is the capillary for thermostat switch.

I’ll be removing the analog probe so no worries :)

I always thought if I was going digital, I would wire a DPDT switch in so I could keep the analog thermostat in place in case the digital control craps out.

I wired in an SPST switch that simply shorts out the thermostat. That way I can run it with either the analog control or an external Auber.

So Steve replied to an email I had sent and said the probe should be 1" from the top middle. Makes me wonder if something changed from the first batch of 4's that rolled out.

When Steve was making the move to offer digital models, Tony (divot maker) was doing research on best location for probe placement, best/most stable temperature, etc. so yes, the location did change.

Cool. I moved the probe in my 3D long ago but assumed the 4's had that already ironed out.

Jason, if you happen to use a fireboard, tappecue or some other device, you might consider mounting a perm pit probe while you are in there. I know it is on the auberins, but for remote notification via the app is what is use it for. The fireboard has 6 probes and I have one dedicated for the pit probe. Just a thought. You will love the 4!

Great idea! How exactly did you mount your FireBoard probe after drilling the hole for it?

I ordered the 1/2 NPT smoker probe (thermistor). I believe you have to order a nut separate now. Obviously when you look at it you will answer your own question. SS311T is part number.

Thanks! That makes sense. I was looking at my current probe wondering how that would work LOL
