Title: "Big Red" is HERE!!
Post by: DivotMaker on April 29, 2018, 05:20:51 PM
The "Top Secret" Project Big Red is finally out!  No "leaking" here!  It's available for EVERYONE!

So, what the heck is it??

Big Red is a WiFi-equipped, super easy to use and read, PID controller for the D-model smokers!!  Holy Cow, is it a WINNER in my book!

The app that controls it is on the Apple store and Google Play, and has been for about a month.  I'm amazed that no one has seen it and let the cat out of the bag!  To those of you that may have seen it, and didn't say anything, Thank You!!

The new controller will be available on all D-models, and I believe Steve will sell you one as a retro-fit.  It is very easy to install...just unscrew the existing controller, and the wires attach in exactly the same way as the old controller.  Took a Phillips head screwdriver and a small straight screw driver for two set screws.  The unit also comes with 2 meat probes that have the K-connectors - very cool!  Only the first probe triggers the PID program, and the second is just for monitoring another piece of meat.

Once it was on, I fired it up and saw the blue light (upper left) was flashing fast.  This is the sync mode.  I entered my WiFi password on the app, and it synced right up!  Once the unit is synced, you can see the functionality of the app.  Let me tell you, folks, if you've had trouble understanding the PID controller, and have WiFi available, this IS the ticket!  The app is very intuitive, and not only shows the current temps and all cook settings in a very easy to understand format, it also graphs the cook!  I'm not sure if the graph is downloadable or not, but I believe it is...more on that later.

I didn't have time to cook with it today, due to work commitments, but did get to enter a program and let it run.  It worked great!  When the unit first switches on, the temp is set to 60, which is good because it isn't going to let the element get hot while you are setting things.  Once you set a program, though, it will revert to that program if power is cycled on the smoker.

Today, I'm just introducing Big Red with a brief post.  I will be going into more details as I learn them, and put it through its paces with a live cook.

Bottom line, so far??  Winner Winner, chicken dinner!!!  Steve and the Auber team hit one out of the park with this rascal!!  They should be on the website shortly!

Sweet! I may have to upgrade.  Maybe for the wi-fi, definitely for the dual probes.

I will tell you, Dave, I believe it's worth an upgrade!  This is the most significant development with SI since we first attempted a digital controller in Jan 2014!  I know we have folks here that remember that - it was pretty much a disaster!  I've attached a couple of old pics to show that first controller.  When we made the decision to integrate the Auber PID into the controller, history was made in the smoker world!  But, it was geeky and clunky.  The PID controls took some getting used to, and although not really difficult, they could be intimidating.  THIS version of the controller has those great Auber PID performance features, but is finally packaged in a very easy to understand format!  It still has all the power of 6 programmable steps, triggered by time or meat temp, but is now so much easier to understand.

I will definitely be upgrading the controller on my #2 with Big Red!!!  I really love the ease of use, and being able to monitor/adjust the smoker remotely!!  Can it get MORE "Lazy Q" than THAT???  I don't think so!

I remember those days well Tony.  You and Steve put in a lot of hard work and it paid off. And this new controller sets a very high standard.

Just want to let everyone know that we will be posting a link for the new phone apps that are used for the new WIFI PID controllers.  The links can be found listed on the "For the Customer tab"  We hope to have a manual made up in the couple weeks.  Until that time instructions can be downloaded for the Auber Instruments website for Auber model #1500HW.  Here are the costs for the new WIFI models, includes two meat probes and new larger LCD display.  We have also upgraded the digital box overlay with UV protected material.

model # 2DWIFI       $824.99
model # 3DWIFI     $1024.99
model # 3.5DWIFI  $1524.99
model # 4DWIFI     $ 2014.99
model # 5DWIFI     $ 2724.99

Considering the robust build quality of the smoker itself and now integrating a Wi-Fi dual probe PID controller, pricing seems very reasonable. I am looking forward to upgrading.

The price increase seems really modest, considering the extensiveness of the upgrade...a totally redesigned controller!

New forum member here.

I don't know whether to be excited or bummed.  I currently use a Weber Bullet, and want the convenience of the electric smoker.  I have been looking hard at a 3D and building myself up to the $899 price.  And WiFi is what I have really been waiting for.  I looked at the CharBroil unit last summer - reviews were not good.  But going to $1025 for the 3DWIFI goes over my psychological price point.  May have to give the 2D another look.  It has more cooking surface than the Weber.  I just have to weigh my needs vs desires.  :)

But the big question:  Are the WIFI models available now?  I do not see them on the site yet.

Hi Luv!  Welcome to the party!  Now that you're here, how about adding a first name & town to your signature line?  We're pretty familiar, around here, and like to know who we're having new conversations with!

Compared to what you are used to, you will be thrilld with the performance of the SI.  As far as the difference in the models, I would definitely recommend the 3D, or even the 3.5D (if you want the extra height).  The 3.5D will let you do those 2 butts and a big packer brisket at the same time with room to spare.  Save a little more, and go with the largest model within your real budget, not just a psychological budget.  Not trying to belittle what you said about that, it simply means that you don't see the extra $125 in value....fair enough.  My recommendation is hang around here as much as needed before deciding.  You will get tons of honest feedback from lots of real users, not advertising.  The members that will advise you have the bona fides, found in the form of thousands of posts, recipes, pictures, lessons-learned, etc., right here in this forum!

Having started with SI with an analog controlled Model 1, I have seen, and been involved in, the evolution up to where we are now.  I can say, with a matter of fact, that the changes to date have been very successful!  We have learned, and kept developing all the way.  The new WiFi controller is really "all that!"  Having used the old standalone Auber PID units, and model 2D and 3D, this change is worth far more than $125 extra.  I believe Steve may be actually underpricing the new controller!  It's that impressive.

So, hit us with as many questions as you want, we're here to help!

Thanks for the input Tony.  I updated my signature.   ;)

A little more on my journey.  I have been a charcoal griller for over 30 years and moved smoking with the WSM about 10 years ago.  About 3 years ago, I actually purchased the big Traeger pellet grill ($1000) during an in store Costco promo.   A whole chicken and a pork butt later, I returned it.  Flavor and bark not even close to he WSM.  And it turned me off of electrics.

But now convenience is key.  I only fire up the WSM about twice a summer because of the time commitment.  And forget winter time use.  And based on your comments, it sounds like I need the 3D.  I think that extra depth would be helpful for the packers and full racks.  And the budget # is purely psychological.  I can certainly swing the extra.  But I probably don't need the 3.5, as the larger quantity smoke is more like a once a year thing.

Now it is just a matter of availability.  Awaiting a response to an email I sent to SI this morning.

I have been trying to do an "actual" smoke with it, but outside influences have not been cooperative!  Grrr!!  I have, however, run it through some programming and setup, and I am absolutely confident that will perform just as well in an actual smoke.  Not sure why it's not on the website yet.  I bet Steve is waiting to get through Mother's Day to release it.

Will the upgrade controller work with my SI that came with an analog controller to begin with?
Title: Re: "Big Red" is HERE!!
Post by: old sarge on May 19, 2018, 07:54:18 PM
I do not know if Steve is going to offer an upgrade kit for the analog controlled smokers. He will, in time, offer the upgraded controller for the D models since it will be largely unplug the old and plug in the new.   Tony (DivotMaker) likely has more info on this than I do since he gets to field test and help in development.

Been awhile since I been on, hello again.  Saw this on Facebook.  Looks very similar to a Heatermeter, looks like they built their own board to replace the pi/home brew setup though.

Cool upgrade

An idea you might want to work on is IFTTT or an Alexa skill.  It’s fun to get Alexa to tell you what your probe temps/pit temp are and be able to get her to adjust the temp on command.  Homebridge is a good way to get into HomeKit for Siri control without having to do all the work to get HomeKit approval.

I would definitely be interested in a Big Red conversion on my SI #2.. Digital conversion was temping but adding WiFi capability is the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for me.
I will patiently wait and hope that Steve offers a conversion kit for my antique SI-2...

I'm not sure, once I found the power button and got it on to WiFi, I stopped reading the manual.  It has functionality to work with a Bradley and control the smoke generator.  I am not sure if that is related to it or not.  One of these days I will sit down and take a read to learn more.

So being that you and I are in Utah, and the store says it takes 2-3 days to ship, it’s about 7 business days from ordering to receiving. That means the best case situation if you were to order tomorrow is Wednesday the 13th. He needs to have it available to order by Wednesday for you to safely get it on time. I would probably call Steve at this point instead of relying on the forum. He can give you the latest update and possibly take your order over the phone:

Does anyone know if the Wifi is capable of transmitting data online for remote reads? It would be awesome to be able to leave the network and still access the cook data. I have a "Meater" which can do this via the cloud so the newly designed PID should have the ability.

I emailed Steve also and his response on 6/4 at roughly 5pm was "We hope to have the wifi units available by the end of this week".

Given that this is a new product with all of the difficulties that entails if it were before the end of June I would be very pleased.

Waiting to order my first smoker so it is worth the wait for the new controller.

Auber web site lists the Model WSD-1500H-W which I believe is very similar or identical states the following. "Access the device remotely. It allows you to check the temperature readings, or change settings from your smart phone at anytime from anywhere (yes, anywhere!) as long as you have cellular or Wi-Fi internet access. You’ll be able to monitor the device when you are not at home, or doing grocery shopping."

So, if I understand correctly upgrading to the new PID controller will give me 3 additional features. 1) easier control of PID via the app 2) Remote capability because of the app and 3) 2 Additional meat probes.

I am assuming the meat probes can just be used to monitor and don't have to be involved in the programing? Am I right in that?

Thanks

Doug - if you are cooking to an internal temp you need to tell the probe what temp you are shooting for. Probe #2 will talk to the controller, so if you want the smoker to drop to a keep warm setting it will do so. #3 if used for another item will just track the temperature and have no effect on the controller program such as going to a keep warm setting. Probe#1 of course is the smoker temp probe.

The only detectable difference is that the 3 indicators for WiFi, alarm, etc are on the upper left of the SI panel rather than the lower left on the Auber.

Steve or Ben should be putting the instructions for the SI version of the controller on the site soon. I can tell you that when the controller first fires up it identifies as Smokin-it with the version. Have you downloaded the app yet and looked it over?  If you are anyways apprehensive you should give Steve a call or shoot him an email.

Thanks Sarge. Without connecting to a device (smoker) the app really doesn't tell you anything that would answer my question. I did email Steve and asked on FB but my question was not being interpreted correctly based on his replies. Anyway, I am going to assume they would not omit functionality available to the Auber equivalent and I just placed my 3DWifi order.

One additional question on Big Red. If you set the PID at temp rather than a program, would Probe 2 just show temps like probe 3 then correct? So in effect I would have two temp probes that I could read remotely and control of the smoker. I most always cook at a set temp, not using programing.

Did you upgrade Dave?

Doug - I did upgrade. Have not used it yet; still picking through the instructions. As far as I can tell, you don’t need prove 2 or 3 if cooking to time only. I am not attempting to use the app. Still piddling around directly at the controller. Haven’t had much free time of late.

Discovered it will display the temperature of three probes all the time, no matter which mode you are using. If you are using two probes instead, there is setting which can disable the temperature for probe 3.

If you set the controller to single step mode, you only need to set one temperature for pit and it will run forever. The controller will display the temperatures of all three probes all the time.

Excellent!

Oh, I will be like you learning my way through when I get mine. Till then I just searched to get answers. That statement was a response I received notfrom my own understanding. But it made me make my decision final. Anxious for next shipment to come in.

Let me know what you think of the instructions. Being non-technical I have found them confusing.

David,
I just my new controller a couple of days ago, but it has been raining here so I have not had a chance to install. The directions are ok, but I did not see anything showing what needs to be hooked up to the new controller. Maybe once the rain stops and I pull the old unit is will be obvious.

Hook-up is simple. Just carefully disconnect old unit by removing plugs and connect new. Holes in unit to smoker should line up. If not just elongate controller holes just enough to secure. Do not enlarge. I had one hole that was off about 1/16th inch.

David,
Thanks the rains have stopped and may do this tomorrow, but most likely not smoke again for a few days (traveling).

Has anyone been able to access their smoker when on the cell network -- NOT your home wifi?

Once I leave my wifi network, the device is not accessible.

One QA says it should work on the cell network once a connection is made on the wifi network.  Another QA says it does not work because the device was set up on the wifi in the first place.

I am thinking we need to configure the router for port forwarding... do you what ports should be utilized?

Any help would be appreciated.  I am stumped.

Thank you!
Chris

Chris,

Mine does work on cellular away from the house.  I'll look in my Check Point appliance and see what ports it is using or what addresses the smoker is accessing.  I was interested in checking on this any way as I  suspect it is really using some cloud service.

Hooked up Big Red today, install was easy, but getting the wifi working was a bit of a pain. The docs look like they pretty much are the same or similar to what Aubur has on their site. Also using other apps I thought I could just select a temp and it would go. I realize there are six settings, but a simple setting would be nice also. Maybe saving some of my favorite smoke would do the trick. Anyways, as with all new toys, a bit of exploring is needed to get it all figured out.

I do think a video of how to use the app and actually start a smoke of chicken, or brisket would be helpful for new users.

For those interested my WiFi controller connects to ip 54.183.197.146 which is host ec2-54-183-197-146.us-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com(Amazon Web Serivces) on port 16384.  So as long as the wifi controller can access the internet on port 16384 you should be able to use your app over a cellular connection once paired over WiFi.

I would love to know if there is any usage or personnel information being collected by the cloud service.  I know this might sound paranoid but it is a reasonable question given the world we live in.

I just tested the Big Red on the cell network, disconnected wireless and it connects just fine with ATT!

I checked on my temps as I was shopping for groceries today with no issues on my 3D wifi.  That was just with standard phone app setup.

Today was my 3rd smoke.  The only issue I had was that I could not get the app to communicate with the smoker, even though the wifi light was solid blue.  I had to uninstall the app and re-add the smoker.  Then all was fine.

Forum Masters - A Wifi Controller topic might be a valuable addition.

First smoke with the Big Red, simple chicken wings, just on setting 250 degrees for 2 hours.
Unless I am missing something it would be nice if the app rang to let you know that the smoke was completed. Other than that, I am really liking the new setup.

Hey there Jason,

Thank you for the response, but I think we're good!

Half-way through my fourth-of-july smoke (first smoke with the 3d), the wifi module on my iPhone 6 stopped working.  Turned out to be a hardware issue.  There was a Verizon store near me that was open on the 4th so I had an excuse to upgrade to a new iPhone X.  The app now works perfectly.

I'm still curious about how the app knows to tunnel through so seamlessly - but it's no longer an issue.

Thanks so much for offering to help!

Chris

Jason,

I just saw your post - thanks for collecting all that info!  Agree about the data privacy -- seems like a reasonable ask.

Thanks again

Any idea what and if any price difference there is between the Big Red and the WSD-1500H-W? Pro's or con's to either or?

Thanks, Tim

Tim,
The Big Red is built and and you will have two additional probes. If you go with the WSD-1500H-W, it is external and you will not have the cabinet probe.
Here is a link with more info on the 1500

Thanks Greg. Am I understanding correctly that Big Red will do everything that the 1500 will do and no type of modifications will be needed, such as re-wiring like many of the members did when they installed the 1500?  Have the prices been put out for Big Red yet?
Thank ya, Tim

Tim - The wifi model smokers which have the Big Red have a built-it cabinet probe. The smokers also have a solid state relay (SSR) attached to the cabinet. Converting an analog to the Big Red while not impossible will be labor intensive; also I do not believe Steve is planning on providing any engineered drawings to do such a conversion but I could be wrong.  The 1500 wifi will give you what you need with no need to rewire the smoker unless you want to. A second meat probe is optional.

In addition to what David said...
You will have a built in heat sink while the plug n play model uses ambient temp. You also won’t have another piece of equipment keep up with and the capability to have 2 meat probes, 1 for programming use and one meat only OR, if you smoke by temp only or time only 2 built in meat probes while only 1 with the plug n play. As far as price difference goes, currently the plug n play is $278 while the difference between the Smokin-it Big Red model is about $225. Having owned both, I favor and have chosen the Big Red Smokin-it upgrade in my case, but would also favor it if I were purchasing a new smoker.

Grady, my apologies. I thought you were trying to decide on a D model vs a D WiFi. Think I picked up you bought a #2 from another member. So upgrading to a Big Red is not possible with the current upgrade. Your better choice in this case would be the auber wifi plug n play. Watch for a sale on it because in the interim you can put out some awesome grub!

Can an analog #1 be retrofitted with a big red?  Is the Big red sold separately?

No and no.  But you can get the stand alone unit from Auber.  It should work just fine.

Are the Big Red upgrades still available to purchase, I have been checking the last couple of months and have not seen any on the site...maybe I am not looking in the right place.  Would love to upgrade my D model to wifi.

I would call/text Steve about this. I was not able to find them on the site either. Hopefully he would be able to hook you up still.
