Permanent internal probe placement
« on: December 29, 2020, 08:50:08 PM »
Refurbishing a well used insulated electric smoker box using an Auber 2 probe controller.
Present fixed probe is under second from the top shelf, about 12" from the top.   I've read where some are placing Auber probe near the top of the box.  My box size is roughly 18x18x36.
What is the consensus?

My box probe in my SI 3DW is near the top of the box near the center in the back. I have read that in some earlier models, the box probes were lower in the box. Some people were having the probe go into the meat when sliding the meat into place while loading their smoker. Obviously that would give you a false box temperature. I would suggest placing it high in the box to avoid that mishap. Good luck and happy smoking.

So, it doesn't matter as long as nothing touches it?
Presently mine is right under second shelf  and center.  Would moving it up effect the operation of the smoker?  Of course if nothing touches it.

The original smokers from SI, like those from CS and ST had the probe down low in the vicinity of the wood box.  SI moved the probe  up and and people did indeed skewer the meat on the probe. It was then moved even higher where it rest today. Using the search feature, look for 'controller bypass'. You will find a lot of info and photos.
