Cant get smoke below 180
« on: November 15, 2014, 08:46:26 PM »
Ive tried chips, chunks and pellets. What am I missing here? I get some smoke but all it does is turn the lump into charcoal.

Temps have been verified.

Not sure of your goal, as long as you have smoke and flavor you are successful. I notice MORE smoke when I place the block in the very back of the firebox. Not all smokes will fully consume a block.

I get smoke at about 80-90F and it is heavy for the first 45 minutes or so, then tapers off to where you treally don't see smoke coming from the top.   I foil my wood chunks and always have a black charred piece of wood when finished, not ashes.

What ambient temp are you trying to get smoke at?  You have to apply enough heat, above the ambient temp, to get wood to smoke.

What kind of wood are you smoking, what size are the chunks?  Very unusual that you don't have smoke at a lower temp than 180.

Temps at 60, tried the hickory chunks included with my smoker. Tried AMazen pellets and super dry Home Depot chunks.
