Title: Best insulated BBQ gloves?
Post by: DivotMaker on July 03, 2013, 06:35:58 PM
Anyone have an opinion on the best insulated BBQ gloves?  I'm thinking of getting some of the silicone kind they sell at the chef's supply places.  I'm thinking they'll be durable and easy to clean.  Thoughts?

Joe's usually spot-on with his equipment recommendations - got a link for me? ;)

Thanks!

Heh, yup, I'm the smoking nerd who buys every supplemental product for "scientific purposes".   ;D

Here are the ones that I use ... the only reason I chose them over the Steve Raichlen gloves on Amazon is that these are black and are more resistant to stains:

http://texasbbqrub.com/bbqgloves.htm

If you've got Amazon Prime, I had a set of these that lasted several years and were very good for the money; they do stain but a quick soak in white vinegar fixes most of the problems:

http://www.amazon.com/Steven-Raichlen-Best-Barbecue-Insulated/dp/B0007ZGURK/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Both sets of gloves are long enough to go well past the wrist and fit even big paws like mine.  I'll just pull ribs, briskets and butts out of the smoker with them to transfer to a meat pan and the heat isn't an issue.  There are some mittens style that lack the individual fingers that I'd avoid ... rendered fat is a slippery thing so every little advantage helps.

Hmmm ... perhaps I need to have Ben create a Gadgets listing so we can all post our gear reviews ...

Heh, I knew I could count on you, Joe!  The Texas rub gloves are the ticket!  At $12, with free shipping, it's a better deal than the Raichen gloves on Amazon Prime ($16.99).  I, too, like that they're black.  Thanks!

Any better ideas out there??

I would also like to see Ben create a Gadgets listing for us nerds out here! ;D

I chose the Steve Raichlen gloves on Amazon due to a recommendation from another forum I visit. I have the gray color, they work fine, but they do stain a bit.  A little soap and a non-scouring sponge did the trick.
Joe knows BBQ, anything he recommends is like the good housekeeping seal of approval.

I pulled the trigger on the Raichien gloves on Amazon, because I was ordering knives, too (Prime, free 2-day shipping, no tax).  Then, the very next day, I was browsing the bbq section at Academy Sports & Outdoors (always cool stuff there), and came across some the black ones like the ones from  Texas rub, at only $12.95 (paid $16.95 for the Raichien gloves).  I got a pair, and planned for a comparison of the two.  I tried the black gloves from Academy, and they were great!  The Raichien gloves arrived today, and I'm sending them back tomorrow.  I can't see any difference, besides the color.  Also, with the negative reviews about staining, I figure I'll just go with the black ones.  Usually have enough to clean after a cook, so I don't want to have to de-stain my gloves, too - just wash them in a little dish soap!  I go with the "easy button" whenever possible!

I agree with Joe,
I have been using the TexasBBQ glove for quite a while now,  it`s a lot better than the thick silicon types.  You have lot more dexterity with this.  It cannot handle super high temperatures. But for smoking it`s perfect.
Oh and it`s easy to clean.  You just wash your hands with a little soap with the gloves on.....
I used to buy their rubs too but I make my own now.....

Update on the gloves!  I've been using the no-name brand I got at Academy sports for awhile, and they're great.  They appear to look just like the ones from TexasBBQ.  The only reason I got them instead of ordering from TBBQ, is I put my hands on them and had them now.  I highly recommend these gloves if you have an Academy near you.

Good to know. I'll have to stop by and get some. I looked at them the last time I was in there.

Oh Zed, so much you folks north of the border miss!  ;)   We have these stores down here in the states that sell everything outdoor-related; exercise equipment, golf supplies, shoes, clothes, fishing/hunting/shooting, and a big selection of bbq equipment & supplies.  It's called Academy Sports & Outdoors.

Might be worth a run south some time just to visit one of these outdoor meccas!   ;D

Oh, and don't be offended - just having a bit of fun!  Besides, you guys have some of the best beer on the planet!  Moosehead, Labatt's Blue, Molsen....mmmm!

Picked up a pair from Academy before my last smoke and they are a great value.  Best of all, after you are through with all the messy handling, just put them on again and wash your "hands" with HOT water and soap.  Easy and clean for the next time.  Thanks for this valuable tip.

I am supposing from what I read here that they are able to withstand the heat form the inside components such as a hot rack?

Hey Etex, I don't have any problems handling the shelves or the meat.  I'm not sure I'd grab the smoke box, but probably could.

I just got some of those standard working gloves, the grey ones every hardware store has for like $3. since the smoker isn't that hot I had no problem. I'm sure they will stain but I didnt' get burnt!

CJ - those will be fine for the heat (pulling racks); I'd just be careful about handling meat with them.  They're not as easily washable as the PVC gloves, and you could get a bacteria issue going in them.  The gloves we're talking about here are washable, and don't absorb any liquids - great for handling cooked meat.

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to update the durability factor.  I've been using the gloves for over a year, and they have held-up fantastic!  No tears, wear, or problems.  They wash easily, and I haven't burned myself once!  Great value!

First off, I'm a Weber fan.  I have a Genesis 1000 grill that's still going strong (since '97!).  However, the only Weber Q gloves I've seen are the cloth type, with silicone grippers, or the oven-mit style.  These are apples and oranges.  The problem with any cloth glove is they absorb meat juice.  The gloves I use are insulated rubber, very slick, and easy to clean.  Grill gloves are different; they're for heat protection only.  BBQ gloves are for handling the larger cuts of meat directly, so you don't want anything that will absorb meat juice and be hard to clean.

Both glove look good and have their purpose. I am a cheapskate I use a lot of nitrile gloves for meat handling and a towel as protection from heat.

I religiously use nitrile gloves during meat prep, but find handling hot meat a little uncomfortable with them.  For $12, I have a pair of gloves that will last (I believe) longer than me, and allow me to handle hot racks and meat at the same time.  I'm cheap, too, and the disposables add up!

Wow there are really many types gloves out there. I recently tried out a full silicone glove I bought off Amazon http://bit.ly/blubbaqoo (http://bit.ly/blubbaqoo). I chose this because I really don't want to be in the situation where my glove melts and my hands get burnt when I am really focused on the grilling, so I try to find a glove that can handle as high heat as possible, and as thick as possible. Call me a Scaredy Cat but it is working  8)

I'm a 2 glove guy.  Harbor Freight welding gloves for rack & pan handling and some rubber/silicone gloves for meat handling.  The meat gloves have no material to absorb stains and wash easily in the kitchen sink.

I have the same gloves Harvey101 linked to. They work good. When I did a chicken in the smoker I moved it to the gas grill (to crisp up the skin) with these gloves and the chicken drippings cause a large flame up while I was holding the chicken. I would have burned my hands or thrown my chicken off the deck had I not been wearing them. I also plan to take them camping this next summer where I believe they should be great for my cast iron cooking.

I have welding gloves for handling most things around the smoker and silicon if I need to be by the grill.

Same old Academy gloves going strong, almost 2 years in!  Lots of great glove choices out there, but this has been one of the best uses of $12 I've had!  The SI grills and meat are not hot enough to warrant welding gloves, or any "super high temp" gloves.  No problem with the cheap gloves!

I too use welding gloves for everything hot but not greasy and silicone for everything else.

texasBBQrub.com has a minimum order of $13. So you can't actually order the $12 gloves with free shipping without adding additional items to your cart. Just sayin... I have a pair of Steve Raichlen gloves from about 10+ years ago, and hate them. They are actually white (before the gray ones) and crazy stiff. Plus, WAY too big for a woman's hands. And I have relatively large hands and long fingers for a gal. I have since bought a pair of silicone gloves designed to fit women, and they are very soft and flexible, fit my hands better, and work great for taking things off the smoker, and the sometimes intricate work of pulling pork etc. Below is what I bought, but I'd love to hear any other suggestions for the ladies!

Yeah, I don't know why companies think women want goofy polka dots and colors, but function over form I say. And they are kind of cute, although I'd prefer plain myself.

Hey Tony, I purchased the gloves from TexasBBQ and really like them. Have used several times, also very easy to clean. I just use hand soap and wash with them on my hands just like washing my hands. I too found they had a limit on orders. So ordered their rub, the gloves are great their rub not so much.  :-X

Bill, I buy medium-duty nitrile gloves, at Harbor Freight, for all my meat prep, but they're not heavy enough to handle the hot stuff (at least for me). :o

Yes, that is what I use the examine gloves for just prep. I have the heavy gloves from TexasBBQ site to handle the hot stuff. Also I had a question for you posted on Rickne sale of his #3 in the for sale section of the forum.

Sorry.  New guy bringing up a dead thread.

Are the TexasBBQ gloves thicker or better than the Academy Sports version?  I noticed the ones they have now are $10.  I checked them out and wouldn't call them thick.

Thanks,

Not sure which gloves you are looking at but I purchased welding gloves from the depot a few weeks back for $14. I was on the kettle grill with the slow n sear and never felt anything, even with putting the fingers into the coals to move around when I dumped the chimney. But these may not be what you are looking for.

I did purchase the Black heat gloves from Academy and they work just fine for most hot applications short of actual "fire". Best part is they are easy to clean. While on your hands dip them in warm dishwater with soap and rub them up just like your washing your hand. Grab a paper towel and dry while they are still on and your done ...easy peasy
