I texted Steve today and he confirmed this, but I was going to keep it my little secret to be first in line.   :-X

I havent sold my large egg yet to fund this venture, but I am going to buy it anyway.

Hertz,

Does your #3 show a estimated delivery date yet?  I ordered mine Thursday, received a tracking number on Friday, but I don't think it has moved yet.  The UPS tracking site says "A UPS shipping label has been created. Once the shipment arrives at our facility, the tracking status--including the scheduled delivery date--will be updated."

Since this ships from the east coast somewhere, UPS shows 4 days transit for me to get it here to Utah on Friday ($200 shipping, wow!).

Just anxious, was hoping to use it Friday night to make a brisket or pulled pork for Saturday afternoon.  I have some help going on in my basement and like to feed the crew.  I have other cookers, I just want to give this a go!  ;D

I dont want to bug the owner, I told him I would leave him alone after texting with him all last week to get my order in.

It would be coming from Michigan. So not all the way out to the coast.

Are you sure it is UPS? I thought they only went out with FED-EX. When I got mine, it wasn't really showing that it left, but then all of the sudden it was at my door.

So, don't despair quite yet.

Just follow the tracking, keep in mind it is crazy season for UPS and Fed Ex.   I ship a lot of items and this time of the year is crazy.   UPS does a good job.

Yeah, its UPS.  The shipping link takes me to the UPS site.  I know, patience.  Just anxious.

Adding in my shipping notice to show you what I mean.  Ordered on the 4th, label on the 5th, waiting for it to actually move on the 8th.  I kind of think it is on a truck after being picked up, and will hit UPS's system tonight when it gets an unload scan in Michigan.  I hope.

Sequimian, I'll see if I can get an update from Steve.  They had a huge rush on them between black Friday and Christmas!  Definitely their best seller!

Steve has more coming in the week of 1/5.  Even he is blown away by how fast the #3 is selling!  It's like they can't build them fast enough!  I told him he better have the factory put on another shift!! ;)

That's good news.  There's a fellow on another site considering an electric and SI is on his list of possibilities.

The are worth the wait, don't settle for a #2. The #2 is a good machine, I just don't want anyone to regret not getting that extra volume.

Suddenly I just decided to go get the dream-machine, otherwise known as #3

Here we are again, folks, OUT of #3s!  Steve told me he'll have a new batch in 2-3 weeks!  I'll update you when I know more.  Absolutely unbelievable how fast the #3 is selling!  I think this batch even took Steve by surprise!  Sounds like he needs to double his order next time!!

I imagine the advance notice of the price increase brought many a fence sitter to their senses.  By the way, the increase really is not that much considering all the improvements made over the years with no increase.  Quite honest and reasonable.

Absolutely nailed it, Dave!  When I talked to Steve about it, that's exactly what he said.  He has gone from 1 handle to 2, upgraded the element, and added handles, with no price increase, until now.  Manufacturing costs are higher, and he's absorbed the upgrade costs, but now has to (reluctantly) have a modest increase.  Even so, the SI remains the "best bang for the buck" in its field.  Thanks for pointing that out, Dave!

It is a very well made machine and I think it's worth every penny. I know I am one of the few who didn't like the shipping charges but I would say that even with that as a factor, I am glad I got one before the price increase! I hope Steve continues to do well as I love to see the little guys succeed. It's the American Dream!!

Long live Smokin-It!!   ;D ;D

Absolutely correct Tony.  As for the shipping, I reckon Steve could roll the cost into the price of the smoker and offer 'free' shipping and fool the majority of the worlds population, or even just 2/3 of the shipping cost and thus lower the perceived shipping cost. Call it the placebo effect.  And that would not be very honest and upfront, two attributes that Steve values highly.

Hmmm...I have a feeling we might just see that in the near future. ???

It's what Amazon does with Prime. Charge a little more but then throw in the shipping.

I fired up the Wayback Machine again, no Peabody or Sherman to help.  A year ago, (see the link) this was the cost of the Model 4.Please note the price, and you had to pay shipping.  Compare that to today's listing with free shipping.  It is still a bargain. But ask yourself, which is the more attractive offer initially?

What do you think, Dave?  If I didn't know anything about the SI #4, a year ago, and saw this, I would think that was a bargain; especially compared to the competition.  Personally, I love to see "free shipping" when I order something.  I'm an Amazon Prime member, and they have definitely lost money on me, with the "free" 2-day shipping!  Most of the time, they make money.  But, with oversize/heavy items, they probably lose.  I never checked what it cost to ship a #4 from MI to, say, Florida, but I bet $300 is probably pretty close.  Maybe some #4 owners will chime in with their thoughts.

Tony,
Free shipping is the hook. Initially, if one were shopping for a smoker and saw $1400 for one of this size, they might look elsewhere (you know what the other analog site is) for similar size at a better price. And they would come up empty handed, and may go so far as to equate a similarly priced but smaller unit as better quality.  And we both know that isn't true either. Checking on shipping costs might delay the purchase, or even negate it.  But bump the price and charge zero for shipping and that sets the hook (for you non-fishing types, you are all played out, no resistance left, you are definitely buying). The trick is to keep the item's total cost, with free shipping, at or below the competition, and offer more amenities in the bargain. Not always easy.  Steve has found a way. And that is why he is successful and his customer base very happy.  The busy forum attests to that.

As for model 4 users chiming in, they don't post much.  Probably too busy smoking and enjoying the good life. Here's hoping!
Dave

Lucky you, twancho!  While waiting for your smoker, head over to the Introductions section and let us get to know you.  A first name and town in the signature helps, too! ;)
