Beautiful Apple wood
« on: October 09, 2015, 10:05:18 PM »
A good friend of mine took down some Apple trees that did not produce fruit any longer. He brought some by the house the other day. I think i have enough apple for a few smokes ;D I cut a round off one of the longer pieces and it split up real well. Happy smoking to everyone.

I think you need to age fresh-cut wood for a while, or you will get off flavors in the smoke, but others on this forum are more knowledgeable about that.

+1 on seasoning the wood, as using green wood will give off a sour taste.

It would be interesting to know the natural moisture content of the "green" wood.

It is very green and heavy with moisture. I planned on seasoning it until next year at this time, give or take a month or two. Ive been using apple that i seasoned for about a year right now  and it has worked well.  Thanks for the input. Thats whats good about this site.

Nice score on the fresh wood.

Since I live in Florida I am looking for some orange wood, but no luck so far.

Hey Greg, try some of the orange and grapefruit orchards as they prune the trees. And ask if you can have some of the wood.

Good thought Bill,

I will have to keep an eye open as I drive by them.

Nice!  If you are curing green wood, you should pick up a cheap moisture meter off of Amazon.  Once it gets in the 30% range, it's perfect!  Can't just go by time, or you may actually over-dry it, depending on ambient moisture.

Also Greg if you have any thunderstorms you might just call some of the orchards and ask if any trees were damaged or when they prune them. I know in my area the farmers prune after the 1st freeze. But, in Fl you all don't get that too often. But, they should have a period where the trees are trimmed.

If you are looking for a inexpensive but a good meter check out the Dr.Meter MD-812 LCD Display Digital Wood Moisture Meter. I bought one off of Amazon last month for $19.00 and it works great.
