How much meat can it hold?
« on: May 03, 2018, 12:21:04 PM »
I am trying to decide between a #2 or #3. I see the 2 has 4 racks.  But at only 2.5 inches apart, I don't see much utilization for all 4 unless you are doing all meats that are not very tall.  My most common smoke I do on my Weber Bullet is briskets and butts.   (However, with the ease and convenience of the Smokin-It, I suspect I will use it more frequently, do some wings, more ribs, etc.  So how much will it hold?

Can I do 2 butts and a packer brisket?
I assume I can do 3 racks of ribs.  What about 4?

If you are looking to do that much at the same time, you'll want the 3 or 3.5.  These smokers like airflow.  What the smoker can hold doesn't really relate to what will turnout well in it.

And FYI, a full rack of Costco ribs won't fit in a #2 without being cut.

 Thanks SuperDave.

That is some good to know info.  Looks like the 3D, specifically 3DWIFI is where I am going.

Perfect choice, Terry!  Steve should have them on the website next Wednesday.  They've been out of town this week.

Thanks for the input Sarge, Dave, and Superdave.  I just ordered the 3D Wifi this morning.  It is even wife-approved even!  I guess I am spoiled.  I cannot wait to get it.  Now I need to start planning the design of a custom cart.

SuperDave, DM, and Old Sarge,

I have had my WSM for about 10 years.  I have to thank you for encouraging me to make the 3D Wifi purchase. I will no longer have to fuss with the WSM again.  Since receiving the unit, I have hit a few milestones.
1.  I did two smokes on consecutive days -chicken breasts and a pork butt.
2.  I did 3 smokes in a time span of 3 weeks.  Last year, I did not do 3 smokes for the whole year with the WSM.
3.  Just finished a brisket that is so moist it almost separated the flat from the point.  Gave up after 2 failures with the WSM. (That bad boy is resting now.  Can't wait until dinner time.)

Yes, it is a lot of money.  But the capacity of the 3D was a great decision.  And the wifi?  Oh my, makes me so spoiled.

I have not used my WSM (still have it) since I bought my #1. But I have a soft place in my heart for the WSM. It's what introduced me to smoking, so I keep it for sentimental reasons. I enjoy getting some sleep now, and the better quality Q I get from the SI.

Just like SconnieQ .. I got my start with the WSM and was very pleased with it. Then the day came that I got tired of all the damper adjustment because of changing weather conditions or something and I ordered my Smokin-it 2. I love being able to get a full nights sleep with those overnight smokes. One of the first things I noticed was a more pronounced smokey flavor from the type of wood you are using and my meat was moister then when I was using the WSM.

I smoke much more often since getting the #2. The kids call ahead to say they will be coming for the weekend and place their order for what they would like me to cook. I love my #2!

My youngest son is now the owner of the WSM and getting his start with smoking meat!
